Abstract
Almost all the published literature on the theory of scattering by crystal dislocations is based on a fundamentally incorrect application of Fermi's 'golden rule' for the transition probability per unit time. The nature of the error is clarified and the correct 'golden rule' for line-defect scattering is derived. The corrections are significant for realistic dispersion laws. Keywords
