Abstract
Chickens and turkeys were susceptible to infection with Mycoplasma gallisepticum by the aerosol route of exposure, based on their serological response. Chickens developed positive HI [hemagglutination inhibition] antibody titers when exposed to aerosol concentrations as low as 38-CFU/liter. Chickens exposed to such low aerosol concentrations showed no outward signs of illness, and often failed to develop a positive plate agglutination anti-body titer even though they did develop a positive HI titer. Turkey poults exposed to low aerosol concentrations ofM. gallisepticum de-veloped both a plate agglutination and HI antibody titer within 2[long dash]4 weeks of exposure. Chickens developed a positive HI antibody titer to M. gallisepticum after exposure to an aerosol that had been generated 4 hr earlier.
