Abstract
Summary. The intragastric administration of a mixture of essential and nonessential amino acids to adrenalectomized rats decreased the concentration of blood glucose and caused a 3-4 fold rise in the level of liver tyrosine aminotransferase in 5 hours. Actinomycin, mannoheptulose and DCI (l-[3′, 4′-dichlorophenyl]-2-isopropylaminoethanol hydrochloride) inhibit this rise. Insulin, epinephrine or glucagon can also raise the level of liver tyrosine aminotransferase under certain conditions in adrenalectomized rats. The effect of insulin may be indirect; it is positively related to the degree of ensuing hypoglycemia. The results suggest that the effect of the amino acid mixture on the level of tyrosine aminotransferase in vivo may be mediated through hormones released in response to hypoglycemia.
