Abstract
In this chapter we describe the epidemiology and clinical features of HIV infection in women and children in the United States. The first part begins with a brief description of the present-day epidemic in women and children, including geographic and demographic distributions of infection and risk factors for infection. The second part describes various modes of serologic diagnosis of HIV infection in adults and infants. Considerable detail is provided because so much of any screening process rests on appropriate interpretation of a reliable test
