Family Therapy Training in a Pediatric Setting

Abstract
The training of psychology interns in family therapy within the Pediatrics Department of the University of Maryland School of Medicine is discussed. The relevance of a family systems viewpoint to the demands of a pediatric setting is examined. Following a review of the primarily psychiatric literature on family therapy training, the University of Maryland training program is presented in detail. An intern's experience with a family is reviewed, exploring the impact of learning disorders and chronic illness within the context of the family's patterns of organization. The responses of the interns and the pediatrics staff are described, and future directions for the training program are considered.
