Abstract
The association of Charlemagne with Mohammed is familiar to all students of the Middle Ages. It has arisen particularly in the various attempts which have been made from about 1920 to assess the significance of the political and cultural changes which took place in the early Middle Ages and are ascribed to, or at least associated with, Mohammed and Charlemagne, and to estimate the connexions between the events in the Arab and the Carolingian parts of the world. The two leading participants in the discussion are the Austrian Alfons Dopsch and the Belgian Henri Pirenne. Ruric, the Nordic viking chief in Russia, has, however, never been mentioned in the discussion. Keywords
