Abstract
The thermal stability of a self-heating two-dimensional slab is considered. The lower surface of the slab is taken to be insulated with the upper surface maintained at a uniform temperature, apart from a narrow strip which is also insulated. The critical value of the Frank-Kamenetskii stability parameter δ(ε) is found to be equal to δoc(1-⅙δocε2+…), where δoc=0.87846 and ε, the ratio of half the width of the insulated strip to the slab thickness, is small. The values of δc(ε) obtained are in good agreement with numerically calculated results (1)for ε≤ 0.35.
