Concretions in the Stria Vascularis

Abstract
Opaque plaques or "concretions" staining darkly with hematoxylin-eosin and reacting PAS-positive have been observed in the stria vascularis in several types of genetically determined inner ear degeneration. Amorphous globules of material taking a dark red stain with hematoxylin-eosin and reacting PAS-positive have also been observed in degenerated vestibular sensory cell areas. One case illustrates early stages of formation of the concretions in the stria. Three additional cases illustrate the concretions in the stria and the globules in the degenerated vestibular system in both the genetically determined degenerative state and in degeneration of acquired postnatal childhood and adult origin.
