Abstract
The B and Q electronically excited states maintain a roughly constant energy separation in a wide range of porphyrins and porphyrin dications. An empirical scale, based upon this observation, has been used to discuss the magnitude of the substituent effects in various cases. The results lead to an alternative explanation of the green colour of meso-tetra-arylporphyrin dications. Keywords
