Abstract
The records of Siberian vagrants are examined over a 9 yr period (1967-1975). Many species fall into 1 of 2 geographical divisions.sbd.north, especially Shetland, and south from Spurn Point (Humberside) down the east coast to Norfolk [England]. Reasons for westward vagrancy are discussed with particular reference to the years 1968, 1974 and 1975. Using data from the Daily Weather Report it is evident that the waves of westward vagrancy coincided with strong anticyclonic activity in central USSR. The situation, size and persistence of these anticyclones are important in the dispersal of juvenile birds in a westward direction. Further westward movement from western Europe is dependent on cyclonic activity within the maritime zone between the English Channel and southern Scandinavia.
