Abstract
Deformations in mechanisms composed of link members of realistic proportions and commonly used materials are studied both analytically and experimentally. It is shown that such industrial systems exhibit distortions largely due to the quasi-static application of the cyclically varying inertia forces acting on the links. A four-bar linkage coupler link of five distinct bending rates was strain gauge tested to confirm results predicted by a decoupled vibration study of the same link. The bending spring rates varied from a well proportioned “stiff” link to a very flexible, poorly proportioned “weak” link while the effective mass content was held constant. Keywords
