Abstract
Investigations of the pathogenesis of chronic inflammatory bowel disease have tended to emphasize infectious, psychogenic or immunologic processes. The immunologic approach has been the most productive, demonstrating antibodies to colonic and bacterial antigens in these patients and toxic effects of their lymphocytes on colonic cells. Keywords
