Abstract
The purpose of the study was to determine if a relationship existed between the role conception held by a nurse at the end of her first year of graduate practice in a bureaucratic environment and her participation in continuing learning activities. Data were collected by means of a personal data questionnaire and three in struments which measure the bureaucratic, professional, and serv ice components of role conception, job-time educational participa tion, and leisure-time educational participation. The sample con sisted of 106 volunteer subjects from 23 selected hospitals in seven midwestern states. Univariate and multivariate analysis of variance were used to study the relationship between role conception and extent of and nature of educational participation. Nature of educa tional participation was determined by factor analysis. The service component of role conception was found to be the primary in fluence on participation in continuing learning activities.
