A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE EXTENT OF THE KNEE-JERK AND THE ACHILLES-JERK

Abstract
Study of 45 men and 54 women revealed the following: (1) the correlation between the extent of these 2 reflexes for the entire group was+0.42 [plus or minus]0.06; for the men, +0.37[plus or minus]0.12; for the women, +0.54[plus or minus]0.09; (2) the mean extent of the knee-jerk in men was 1/2 as great as that of the women, and of the Achilles-jerk 0.7 as great; (3) the extent of the knee-jerks shows more variability in women than in men; the sexes show no difference in variability in the extent of the Achilles-jerk; (4) for the Achilles-jerk both men and women fall into 4 well defined groups, which are the same for both sexes; in case of the knee-jerk the men fall into 5 groups and the women into 4, the range being different for the sexes; (5) 25% of the men and 9.7% of the women had no Achilles-jerk; 8.3% of the men and 0% of the women had no knee-jerk; (6) there was no correlation between height, weight, and age and the extent of either jerk in the group studied.
