Abstract
A simple procedure is described for measurement of blood volume of farm animals based on the phosphorus labeled red cell method. The blood volume values are reported for 20 sheep, 28 swine, 18 cattle and SO burros of variable ages and weights, and a summary of these findings, together with those in the literature, is presented for comparative purposes and to provide basic values for the normal animal. Consideration of these data indicated that: It is suggested that the widespread use of the simple procedure here described may lead to correlations which could provide additional measurements of body size, nutritional levels, and physiological status of farm animals.
