Abstract
THE elucidation of the major functions of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland during the past four decades is a monument of scientific achievement. In a microcosmic sense its history parallels and reflects the developments of biologic investigation during this period. Initially, a series of discoveries that ultimately led to the definition of the active principles involved revealed that the gland exercises direct or indirect control over a wide spectrum of biologic processes. The earlier difficulties encountered in the isolation and purification of individual hormones now seem nearer to solution with the development of superior analytical and preparative methods. . . .Keywords
