Abstract
Na ethyl xanthate while effective for separation of arsenious acid from arsenic acid, does not give the separation of corresponding phenyl derivatives . Ethane-1,2-dithiol in CC14 gave satisfactory separation of these compounds. Four ml. of ethane-1,2-dithiol is diluted to 1 1. with CC14. The arsenical soln. is acidified and extracted by shaking for 2 min. with 2-20 ml. portions of di-thiol reagent followed by 3-20 ml. portions pure CC14. Between each fresh treatment with dithiol reagent and CC14 the funnel was washed without shaking with 5 ml. of CC14. The arsenic was detd. in the aqueous phase and in combined extracts after removal of CC14 by distillation at normal pressure in presence of 25-30 ml. 1% Na2CO3 to retain the dithiol derivative of phenylarsenious acid which is somewhat steam volatile. BAL (2:3-dimercaptopropanol) is not effective as a reagent. Keywords
