Abstract
Cultures of Clostrldlum paraputrificum and C. tertium (under anaerobic conditions) hydrate [DELTA]4-3-ketosteroids of the C-19 and C-21 series to the 5/3.3o-hydroxytetrahydro derivatives. The 5[beta],3-ketodihydro de-rivatives were intermediate products. Oxygen functions on C-ll, C-17 or in the side chains vere not changed inthe reaction and were without effect on the course of hydration. 21-Acetate was not changed in the reaction.
