Abstract
Four trials were conducted to test the efficacy of a nonionic surfactant POE (polyoxy-propylene polyoxyethylene block polymer) in control of alfalfa pasture bloat. In all trials 2 pairs of fistulated, identical twin, dry cows with a history of bloat susceptibility were used. Levels of 5 to 20 g POE administered per cow once daily in the morning completely prevented abdominal dlstention for at least 12 hr after animals were fed green alfalfa. During the morning no treated animal receiving 20 g POE scored above zero, indicating that the rumen contents were completely devoid of froth. Also, bloat on the 2nd day (24 to 36 hr following treatment) was significantly lower than during the control period, indicating a significant carry-over effect of 1 treatment of 20 g. The carry-over effect was lost at the 10 g level.
