Abstract
Quantity and proximate composition of breast milk from Burmese mothers of low socioeconomic group at three stages of lactation were studied. Protein content (total N × 6.38) of breast milk at 1 to 4 months of lactation was significantly higher than that of 7 to 12 months but there were no significant differences in milk fat, lactose, and energy among three stages of lactation. No significant differences in proximate composition of breast milk were observed between well-nourished and malnourished groups. Potential milk output of mothers belonging to well-nourished group was significantly higher than the corresponding values for milk intake of infants. Keywords
