Abstract
This paper outlines the results of a general transient network analyzer study on a 765 kV circuit to determine the phase-to-ground switching surge overvoltages for a variety of circuit breaker and transmission line conditions. The circuit was modelled after the standard transmission line as specified in ANSI standard C37.071a- 1974. An electronic differential analyzer was used to control the transient network analyzer and to rapidly measure switching surge statistical data. The results are given in terms of curves showing the variation in surge magnitudes with network and circuit breaker parameters including closing span, insertion time, insertion resistance and compensation. Keywords
