Abstract

β Elemenone (1) is an A -secoeudesmane sesquiterpene isolated from Rhododendron aamsii Rehd. A total synthesis¹ of β-elemenone has been acconplished starting from 2-methyl-1,4-cyclohexanedione via a decalindione monoketal in thirteen steps. Our recent quest for shorter routes to the sesquiterpene has resulted in an alternative synthesis of Grieco's intermediate (2) which is only three steps away from β-elemenone.
