Abstract
The ontogeny of the eye muscles in Ardea cinerea was studied and special stress laid upon the abducens complex, i.e., the lateral rectus, quadratus and pyramidalis. The tendon of the pyramidalis appears later than the 2 nictitate muscles and in the form of a mesenchymal condensation without any connection initially to the pyramidalis muscle Cords'' (1924) and Nishi''s (1934) opinions, based upon observations of adult material, that the avian pyramidalis and quadratus muscles are homologous to parts of the crocodilian retractor bulbi seem to be clearly verified by the observations of the ontogeny in Ardea.
