Physical Measurements of One Thousand Smith College Students

Abstract
1000 Smith College students measured on entering college and 4 yrs. later at graduation (1926-1928 inclusive) showed no consistent increase in height or weight during college residence. Height is "usual posture" and not the students "best or corrected posture." "Definitely stocky" and "definitely slender" subjects are treated separately, but economic, social and racial backgrounds are not analyzed. Age ranged from 16 to 24 yrs.; by age group the median height ranged from 64.5 to 65.2 in.; median weight, from 122 to 130 lbs. There was no consistent increase of weight with age. Catamenia began during the 12th, 13th or 14th year in 81% of the cases; the periodicity of menstruation was of the 28-day type in 67% of the group. Catamenia began at a later age among the slender students and the menstrual period was more irregular. The group of students entering college at 16 yrs. contained 28% definitely stocky and 19% of the definitely slender type, whereas of the group entering at 20 yrs. 14% were stocky and 45% slender.
