A Convenient Access to Polyalkylperylenes

Abstract
3,4,9,10- and 2,5,8,11-Tetramethylperylene are synthesized by a cyclodehydrogenation reaction, initiated by lithium metal, from tetramethyl-1,1′-binaphthalenes. The yields are higher than those obtained by previous methods of perylene synthesis. Some limitations with regard to the nature of the substituents are briefly mentioned.
