Corneal refractive correction by laser thermal keratoplasty

Abstract
We report corneal curvature modifications for rabbit corneas which we achieved by controlled heating of the cornea with a continuous Co:MgF2 laser in the 2 micron region. Our experiments were designed to flatten the cornea, which is required for myopic correction. Large changes of 6-8 diopters in corneal curvature have been stable for the one year duration of the experiments. This is a new method for correcting corneal curvature which retains normal corneal function while not requiring invasive techniques such as cutting or ablation.
