Abstract
This article presents different ways of conceiving Europe: as part of a cultural realm, as the place of an ‘economic miracle’, as a community formed by shared cultural experiences, modernity and ideology. Can these approaches help distinguish Europe from non-Europe? After a brief account of the discussion on Europe's geographical boundaries, Europe is considered in the context of geo-ideology by posing the question: To what extent do ‘pan-Europeanism’ and projects of European political unity define Europe as an entity for geographic study?
