EXPERIENCE OF AMERICAN PROFESSIONAL WOMEN IN OVERSEAS BUSINESS ASSIGNMENTS.

Abstract
171 multi-national companies participated in a survey identifying 291 women who have undertaken international assignments. The companies were from five major industry groupings: manufacturing, retailing, consulting, insurance and banking. 34 women were interviewed personally. 32 of the 34 women indicated overwhelming satisfaction with their assignments. They cited positive feedback of various kinds including verbal approval from superiors and promotions. Their feelings of success were corroborated by the fact that the majority were sent on later assignments. Interactions inside and outside the company during the assignments differed by industry sector. Half of the women interviewed interfaced mainly with other company personnel while overseas. Some differences were found by industry sector. The findings indicate that multi-national companies can and should utilize American women mere widely in non-United States environments.
