Abstract
Breast milk quantity consumed by 37 infants fed strictly on demand, was measured with the test feeding technique in their natural environment. The 12 hour volume decreased from an initial 500ml to 385ml at 18 months. Protein and calorie intake were calculated on the data from a previous study on breast milk composition in the same community.Assuming a 45% night-time feeding WHO/FAO requirements for protein and calories are met up to the age of 4 months. According to Harvard standards growth was satisfactory on breast milk alone up to the age of 5 months. No single case of failure to breast feed was observed in this community. Keywords
