Abstract
A generalized discrete-ordinate method is used to obtain accurate numerical solutions of the line transfer problem in which the scattering is described by a redistribution function. Extensive results are obtained and discussed for the cases of pure Doppler broadening and of Doppler and natural broadening combined. It is shown that, in the latter case, the intensity of radiation emerging from a semi-infinite isothermal atmosphere approaches that for coherent scattering in the line wings instead of approaching the value of the Planck function. Keywords
