Abstract
Investigations into the mechanism of capsule opening in karri (Eucalyptus diversicolor F.Muell) indicated that moisture loss is the factor primarily responsible for the movement of the capsule valves. The pattern of seedfall was examined after regeneration burns of various intensities. There were two stages of seedfall, that from scorched crowns, and that from green crowns apparently unaffected by the burns. The latter was due to the development of an abscission layer at the base of the pedicel. Formation of the abscission layer is initiated in some way by the burns. Keywords
