Risk to Contacts of a Medical Practitioner Carrying HbSAg

To the Editor: Referring to the controversy on this subject (N Engl J Med 292:1079, 1975) we should like to add another observation:Within the last two years 15 inhabitants of a village of eastern Switzerland with approximatively 3000 inhabitants acquired acute hepatitis (14 icteric forms, 13 HBS Ag positive by radioimmunoassay and counter immunoelectrophoresis). This figure represents an incidence of 150 (1973) and 300 (1974) per 100,000 per year, whereas in other parts of eastern Switzerland (including neighboring areas with similar predominantly rural socioepidemiologic background), the frequency was found to be around 30 per 100,000 according to a . . .
