Abstract
The Zeeman splittings of many of the energy levels of the 4f3 configuration of Nd3+ in a LaCl3 crystal are measured with the C axis parallel to the magnetic field for a range of field strengths. Zeeman splittings of all the 4f3 configuration energy levels are calculated to first order with and without including J mixing by the magnetic field. Several new levels are identified and many other assignments are confirmed using the experimetnal data and the calculations. Comparison between the experimentally observed splittings and the calculated values is found to be good, in general, although some limitations of the semiempirical wave functions used are discussed. Keywords
