Abstract
Tested the hypothesis that smokers regulate their nicotine intake. 11 34-52 yr old Ss smoked cigarettes of high or low nicotine content in alternating weeks. Long-time heavy smokers did regulate; they consistently smoked more low- than high-nicotine cigarettes. Long-time light smokers did not appear to regulate consistently. Practical implications are discussed (e.g., the efficacy of placing tax rates on cigarettes according to their nicotine and tar content).
