Abstract
Of 9 patients with ashy dermatosis, 8 were women; most were young adults when the dermatosis began. The incidences of atopy (5 patients) and thyroid disease (3 patients) were striking. Some of the patients were clinically atypical and histologic study in all cases showed basal cell vacuolation, Civatte bodies, pigmentary incontinence and a mild perivascular lymphohistiocytic infiltrate. Direct immunofluorescence microscopy, performed in 4 cases, showed IgM cytoid bodies. The postinflammatory hyperpigmentation in ashy dermatosis and other dermatoses may occur on the basis of basal cell apoptosis.
