Abstract
The practical advantages of plasma over whole blood transfusions are: Blood groups need not be detd., time is saved, plasma in liquid form keeps 2-3 mos. and indefinitely if dried. The results are given for 21 cases, including red blood corpuscle counts and measurement of mean corpuscular vol. in most of the cases before and after plasma transfusion. After hemorrhage red corpuscles swell appreciably in size and many are side-tracked out of circulation in muscle capillaries. Transfusion of plasma restores these corpuscles to the circulation, constituting an "auto-transfusion" blood. 3 references.
