Abstract
Human serum ribonuclease activity was found to be significantly elevated in the sera of hyperthyroid patients as compared with sera from normal and myxedematous individuals. The administration of thyroid hormone to a patient with myxedema caused a prompt elevation of serum ribonuclease activity, and the enzyme levels in hyperthyroid patients were reduced to normal when adequate treatment was instituted. The serum ribonuclease was inhibited by heating and heparin in the same manner as was bovine crystalline ribonuclease. Two peaks of alkaline ribonuclease activity were found when human serum was subjected to electrophoresis on starch blocks. These findings are discussed briefly.
