Abstract
The discharges of LH consequent to the administration of estradiol benzoate (EB) during the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle were blocked by acute elevations in plasma progesterone (P) concentrations to supraphysiologic levels. This eiTect of P was observed when circulating estrogens and P rose simultaneously or when P was introduced 12 hr after the EB injection. Physiologic plasma P concentrations, achieved either by a functional corpus luteum or by the implantation of P—containing Silastic capsules, also blocked the positive feedback action of estrogen on LH and FSH release. P, however, did not interfere with the negative feedback inhibition of LH and FSH secretion by estrogen. (Endocrinology92: 1496, 1973)Keywords
