Abstract
The application of the recursion method to the study of Anderson localisation in disordered systems is discussed. The interpretation suggested by Weaire and Hodges (1979) is elaborated. In this, slowly decaying fluctuations of the recursion coefficients reflect the existence of regions of localised states. The index which characterises this decay is predicted and the resulting value is consistent with recent numerical estimates. In this paper various components of this picture, such as the relation between localisation in real space and on the chain generated by the recursion method are analysed in more detail with the help of numerical calculations. Keywords
