Sibling Relationships and Adjustment of Children with Disabled Brothers and Sisters

Abstract
Summary Research on children with disabled siblings reveals thai these youngsters may treat their siblings more kindly and spend more time caring Ibr them than do children with nondis-ablcd siblings. Their experiences may produce more worries and anxieties; however, these children also may develop more tolerance and humanitarian concerns. Characteristics of disabled siblings and the children themselves as well as family circumstance may affect children's reactions. Interventions for promoting positive sibling relations and personal adjustment include behavioral training in managing and coping with the disabled child, sibling support groups, and parent education programs designed to foster ' understanding of the special needs of these youngsters.
