Abstract
Curves are presented showing the rate of loss of water by evaporation from soil containing varying amts. of moisture. It is proposed to calculate the conservation of moisture in fallow soil by the use of rainfall and evaporation data in conjunction with these curves. Cylinders were fitted with uniformly packed earth moistened with varying amts. of water and the rate of evaporation detd. over a period of time. Additional water was added at intervals to simulate the effect of rainfall occurring before the soil had become air dry. When freshly wetted, the rate of evaporation was approx. equal to that from a free water surface. This rapid rate was maintained for only a relatively short period varying directly with the amt. of water added. Evaporation was influenced directly by the amt. of removable moisture in the soil at any definite time. A comparison of calculated and actual conservation in the field and in tanks showed a satisfactory agreement. Keywords
