Star formation in the Magellanic Clouds - II. Discovery of a protostar in the Small Magellanic Cloud

Abstract
An infrared protostar has been discovered in the Small Magellanic Cloud in the H II region N76B. The properties of this object are similar to those of the galactic protostars typified by the young clusters in NGC 7538 and by the recently discovered protostar in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This result provides direct evidence for a current mode of star formation in the SMC, and shows that sites of star formation in the Magellanic Clouds have a morphology similar to those in the Galaxy. In particular the presence of large quantities of dust in the star forming regions is implied.
