Abstract
The diet of 2 species of murids (Mastomys erythroleucus and Arvicanthis niloticus) and of a species of gerbillid (Taterillus gracilis), studied through stomach contents, shows the opportunistic omnivorous-graniverous character of these rodents, which use most of the species of seeds produced by the herbaceous layer. These rodents also eat stems and leaves (especially A. niloticus) and insects, mainly termites (especially T. gracilis and M. erythroleucus). Reproduction coincides with the availability of seeds rich in energy; protein needs seem to be filled by certain seeds (Curcurbitaceae, Compositae, Leguminosae) or by arthropods. The impact of the previous consumption of rodents is estimated from 1975-1978; for 1978, it represents from 10-15% of the production of seeds from the herbaceous layer. In an outbreak period, consumption reaches > 200 kg/ha.
