To the Editor: Over the past decade the treatment of Cushing's disease (pituitary-dependent adrenal hyperplasia) has changed, largely because of the advent of transsphenoidal pituitary microsurgery. Impressive results for the surgical cure of this disorder have been reported from several centers.1 2 3 Cure rates for microadenomas (85 to 94 per cent), with return of normal pituitary function and with relatively rare recurrences, have made transsphenoidal pituitary surgery the treatment of choice in adults with Cushing's disease.4 Because our results (cure rate, 55 per cent) were much poorer than those that would be expected in view of the literature, I surveyed 30 . . .
