Abstract
The tools of adiabatic Floquet theory are developed to study the control of population transfer by intense chirped laser pulses. We give a formulation of the adiabatic evolution for systems with a slowly varying frequency, which exhibits an effective frequency carrying relevant physical information. These tools are applied to dissociation. The path leading to dissociation corresponds to a single instantaneous Floquet state evolving adiabatically. We obtain 96% dissociation of the HF molecule by a chirped ultrashort infrared laser pulse of duration 2.3 ps and intensity 10(13) W/cm(2).
