THE CHOLESTEROL AND CHOLESTEROL ESTER CONTENT OF CEREBROSPINAL FLUID IN PATIENTS WITH MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS AND OTHER NEUROLOGICAL DISEASES

Abstract
Both the free and esterified cholesterol levels of cerebrospinal fluid were studied in 13 patients with multiple sclerosis, 34 patients with other neurological diseases and 6 controls. The group experiencing various neurological disorders showed elevated cholesterol levels due to increases in both the free and esterified fractions while an increase in the esterified fraction, which in several cases reached over 60% of the total cholesterol level, accounted for the higher cholesterol levels in patients with multiple sclerosis. With further study it is hoped that correlation of the cerebrospinal fluid analyses with the degree of demyelination may aid in diagnosing multiple sclerosis.
