Abstract
A capillary microrespirometer suitable for use with individual larvae of T. bartschi is descr. It consists of a bulb blown in a length of capillary tubing within which respiring tissue, medium, and a suitable absorbent for CO2 may be placed. O2 consumption is calculated from displacement of a kerosene meniscus in the unmodified capillary portion of the apparatus. Data are presented for O2 consumption of over 50 normal larvae at various stages of their Tree living existence. Avg. O2 consumption is approx. 25 [mu]l./hr./larva. Variations in metabolic rate which appear during development are related to behavioral changes. This publication has 4 references indexed in Scilit:
