Abstract
Transfers of fish species between countries have been carried out with increasing frequency in the last two decades. Whereas many introductions have been of great benefit in that they have formed the basis for new fisheries or for expanded aquaculture, others have created growing international concern. It is obviously impractical to ban any future transfers of fish species, but it is essential to ensure that any introductions are beneficial both through the acquisition and dissemination of information, and by the development of international understanding and agreement.
