Abstract
Using a demountable x-ray tube it is shown that elimination of the window between its target and a ``fluorescing'' sample increases the intensity of the characteristic x rays excited in a light element by as much as 100-fold without loss of stability in the tube operation. The nature of this effect is discussed and its potential value for the x-ray spectroscopy of light elements illustrated. Keywords
