Abstract
In Witten-type proofs of the positive energy theorem for an asymptotically flat spacetime one encounters the problem of showing the existence of asymptotically constant spinors satisfying a certain differential equation on a noncompact hypersurface. In this paper it is shown that this problem can be avoided by using a much simpler equation in the asymptotic region. This gives a new and simple proof of positivity of both the ADM energy at spacelike infinity and the Bondi energy at null infinity. Keywords
